IEIIT Bologna - History

The IEIIT Bologna unit dates back to 1970, when the National Research Council of Italy and the University of Bologna decided to found a CNR research group within the Faculty of Engineering (presently School of Engineering and Architecture).

This centre was formerly named CIOC (Centre for Interaction Operator-Computer) and, for many years, was mainly concerned with Information Systems; it consequently hosted several researchers of the Database Group at the former DEIS (presently DEI/DISI). Due to several factors, such as the ever growing interdisciplinary nature of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and new staff from other research and application areas, focusing, in particular, on Electronics and Telecommunications research areas, the activities of the centre were mainly redirected to Telecommunication Systems and their applications. The first denomination was therefore substituted by CSITE (Research Centre for Computer Science and Telecommunications Systems) in 1992. In 2003, CSITE joined other CNR centres and institutes to form CNR-IEIIT.
