Informational cascades are imitation phenomena which can emerge in financial markets. When an informational cascade occurs, the agents completely disregard their own information and blindly follow the behavior of the other traders. The models in the literature, although capable of replicating this phenomenon, do not take into account the possibility of reproducing informational cascades of different intensities, displayed by empirical evidences. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a new model of opinion dynamics capable of replicating informational cascades of different magnitudes. This is accomplished by viewing informational cascades as a diffusion of a certain opinion in a network of financial agents, whose trading strategies dynamically depend on that of their neighbors according to a nonlinear law. Following the logic of pinning control, we model the generic exogenous information triggering informational cascades as a control signal fed by an external entity, the pinner, to a subset of agents. By virtue of the received information, they take the trading action that will be imitated by the non informed traders. In this framework, we can exploit some results of the so called "partial pinning control" in order to assess the number of non informed agents which reach consensus on the pinner's opinion, and thus are involved in the informational cascade. This assessment is based on the topological structure connecting the agents: different topologies generate informational cascades of different magnitudes. We test our model of opinion dynamics in an agent-based artificial financial market, showing its capability of replicating informational cascades of different and predictable intensities.

Elena Napoletano received a Master Degree in Management Engineering (with honors) from the University of Naples "Federico II", submitting the thesis "Agent behaviors in an artificial financial market". She is a Ph.D student in Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. Her research interests include dynamics and control of complex networks, with a particular focus on social applications. She is currently investigating how tools from pinning control theory and opinion dynamics can be exploit to model and analyze some financial phenomena.

We consider online task computing (a.k.a. crowdsourcing) environments such as Amazon Mechanical Turk. A master sends tasks across the Internet, to workers willing to perform a computational task. Unfortunately, workers are untrustworthy and might report an incorrect result. We capture the workers' behavior through two realistic models: (1) the "error probability model" which assumes the presence of altruistic workers willing to provide correct results and the presence of troll workers aiming at providing random incorrect results. Both types of workers suffer from an error probability altering their intended response. (2) The "rationality model" which assumes the presence of altruistic workers, always reporting a correct result, the presence of malicious workers always reporting an incorrect result, and the presence of rational workers following a strategy that will maximize their utility (benefit). We compare two reliability techniques, "voting" and "auditing", in terms of task assignments required and time invested for computing correctly a set of tasks with high probability. Considering the rationality model, we take an evolutionary game theoretic approach and we design mechanisms that eventually achieve a reliable computational platform where the master receives the correct task result with probability one and with minimal auditing cost.

Evgenia Christoforou is a Post-doc researcher at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications at Politechnico di Torino. She received her PhD in Mathematical Engineering from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, while working as a PhD student at IMDEA Networks. At the same time, she was awarded a highly competitive FPU scholarship from the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECD) to pursue her PhD studies. During her studies she also visited MIT on a six-months internship. In 2012 she received her Master degree in Computer Science while being employed as a Research Assistant in the Department of Computer Science in the University of Cyprus, on a project funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation. Her research interests focus on Mechanism Design and Game Theory, with an emphasis on designing mechanisms for achieving reliability and quality in volunteer computing and crowdsourcing.
