Seminario "Meta-Atoms for 3D Printing Metamaterials"

Titolo: Visible Light Communications: easing the RF spectrum crisis

Relatore: Prof. Yiannis Vardaxoglou, Fellow IEEE, Head of the Wireless Communications Research Group, Loughborough University, UK
Data: Giovedì 14/09/2017 alle 3.00 p.m.
Luogo: Stanza "Nyquist" (DET meeting room, Cittadella Politecnica, 4th floor), Torino

Abstract:
In this seminar, Prof. Vardaxoglou will introduce the concept and uses of MeTa-Atoms (MTAs) in electromagnetic and engineered metamaterials. MTAs are meso scale inclusions in a host material. These meta-atoms could be varied in constitution and geometry to augment a variety of artificial and novel magneto-dielectric properties. Various 3D-printed multi-layered metamaterials with different periodicities fo dielectric or metallic inclusions will be shown. The effect of the periodicity (space between adjacent elements) on the effective metamaterials properties is examined by placing the 3D-printed samples in a waveguide simulator or on a resonator measuring system. Some of these structures have already been applied in engineering applications such as antennas, microwave lenses and electronic devices.

Biography:
Yiannis Vardaxoglou is the Head of the Wireless Communications Research Group (WiCR) researching wide- ranging topics applicable to cutting-edge wireless communications technology. His research focuses primarily on metamaterial structures for electronic devices, antennas in microwave and mm-wave engineering. He has authored 300 publications and several book chapters and a pioneering book on Frequency Selective Surfaces. WiCR collaborates with many internationally leading universities and companies and is home to the internationally renowned Loughborough Antennas & Propagation Conference (LAPC).

Seminar on "Population Estimation from Mobile Network Traffic Metadata"

Talk by Dr. Ghazaleh Khodabandelou of Télécom SudParis

Abstract -- Smartphones and other mobile devices are today pervasive across the globe. As an interesting side effect of the surge in mobile communications, mobile network operators can now easily collect a wealth of high-resolution data on the habits of large user populations. The information extracted from mobile network traffic data is very relevant in the context of population mapping: it provides a tool for the automatic and live estimation of population densities, overcoming the limitations of traditional data sources such as censuses and surveys. In this work, we propose a new approach to infer population densities at urban scales, based on aggregated mobile network traffic metadata. Our approach allows estimating both static and dynamic populations, achieves a significant improvement in terms of accuracy with respect to state-of-the-art solutions in the literature, and is validated on different city scenarios.

Bio -- Ghazaleh Khodabandelou is a research assistant at Télécom SudParis. She received her Ph.D in Computer Science from Sorbonne University in Paris. She received her M.S. degree in Signal Processing from Paris Descartes university. Her current research and teaching interests include big data analytics and application of advanced machine learning and statistics techniques on massive data.

Seminario: Embedded Systems in Train Equipment Certifcation and in Telecommunication Digital Repeater

Il seminario tenuto dal Dr. Naim Harb avra' luogo venerdi' 17 Giugno alle 15:45 presso la sala riunioni dell'Istituto.

Abstract: Recent years have witnessed a great interest in embedded systems circling around CPUs, FPGAs and GPGPUs. With a lot of research on the architectural level and the decomposition of homogeneous and heterogeneous architectures to obtain powerful embedded systems. Researchers also investigated much around the applications that can benefit from such systems but not much is published oriented towards industry. This presentation will elaborate on two industrial applications and systems that do benefit from embedded systems. One is oriented around train certification equipment and the other around a telecommunication digital repeater. The presentation provides a tutorial like scheme that shows how to go from research to developing a commercial product used in industry.

Bio: Dr. Naim Harb received his PhD with distinction from the University of Valenciennes (UVHC) in Valenciennes, France in 2011. He was an invited researcher at the faculty of engineering at the Texas AeM University in Doha, Qatar in 2009. Spent almost a year working on image and video processing on embedded systems at the electronics department in UMons Belgium. Ever since 2012, he has been selected as a research and project manager for several industrial projects between the electronics department and industrial partners. Such projects included train equipment certification and telecommunication repeater system design, develop and industrialization. His area of specialty orbits around embedded systems especially FPGAs, CPUs and GPUs and reconfigurable computing and application mapping on embedded systems in various domains. In addition to embedded systems, his areas of interest include genetics, safety and security surveillance systems. He has around 20 international publications in high ranked international conferences and journals calls and is a technical committee reviewer in several international scientific congresses.

Seminario "Microsystems for cartilage repair and nanotechnology", interviene Riccardo Gottardi - 19 maggio alle ore 11.00

Cell guidance. Directing cell migration (stem cells, regulatory T cells, etc.) to areas of the body that have suffered from damage or for an operation, and directing locally cell differentiation and proliferation offer a great potential for regenerative medicine. Riccardo is validating microparticles for the controlled release of PDGF, one of the chemokines more effective in inducing the migration of mesenchymal stem cells, as well as of synthetic small molecules to control cell fate.

Microtissue bioreactor. The development of new drugs requires extensive testing on animal models and humans with great impact on drug development costs and animal and human well-being. The NIH jointly with DARPA has launched an initiative to create “organs on a chip”, microtissue replicates of animal and human organs that could be used for high throughput screening of new drugs. The bioreactor systems for each organ platform can then be used individually, to assess a specific compound, or jointly to assess cross reactivity and side effects. Riccardo is working within the Center for Cellular and Molecular Engineering team to develop a high throughput microtissue bioreactor array for osteochondral tissue culture.

Ultra short carbon nanotubes. Carbon nanotubes have been proposed for applications ranging from energy, electronics, biomedicine, but their very low solubility is an obstacle to the industrial scalability. Riccardo has contributed to the development and characterization the shortest nanotube ever made (2-5nm), which exhibit excellent dispersibility and can be made perfectly soluble. Having the size and hydrophilic-hydrophobic-hydrophilic structure of membrane proteins, their use as synthetic ion channels for the controlled release of drugs is being explored.

Development of human-friendly assistive robot vehicles for the ambient assisted living at Karlstad University

Abstract: In industrialized countries, regional disparities in healthcare and welfare services, increased medical expense caused by aging societies, and shortages of medical staff have become serious problems. In particular, researchers have been developing assistive robots for health care and welfare applications to improve the security, independence and quality of the elderly so they can stay in their homes longer. As a consequence, this opens the opportunity to free up time so that medical staff can provide care for the patients who really may need a human support. However; the current assistive robots are mainly designed to accomplish one single task and still required that the technical medical staff to train elderly and/or care givers to learn how to exploit the robot's capabilities. Therefore, the next generation of assistive robots have to be natural and intuitive for the elderly as well as care giver to interact with, communicate with, work with as partners, and learn to adapt to their respective needs (multipurpose development concept). In this lecture, at first, I will introduce Karlstad University as well provide an overview of the possibilities for academic exchange of students and staff. In the second part, I will give an overview of the current research on the development of assistive robot vehicles for assisting care givers and for providing physical support to elder persons.

Il seminario si terra' Venerdì 27 Febbraio 2015 dalle ore 11 alle ore 13 presso Sala Leonardo - Area della Ricerca di Genova - piano 11

Korea-Italy joint Forum for C-ITS

The wide diffusion of mobile connected devices increases the data produced and consumed. On one hand this highlights the necessity of very high level performance networks and, on the other hand, this enables a variety of new services addressing safety, traffic management, smart navigation, pollution measurements, urban surveillance, forensic investigations, and Internet access. In this context, cooperative-intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS) represent a near solution that, however, suggest several challenges still to be faced.
This joint Forum gathers researchers from CNR-IEIIT (Italy) and KETI (Korea) and industrial players from several Italian and Korean companies, to discuss the opportunities enabled by these new C-ITS systems and proposing new architectures, protocols and strategies toward a smart and reliable environment, able to provide more efficient and secure services.
During the Forum, methods and scenarios will be devised to provide methods for opportunistic management of heterogeneous radio resources, opportunistic exploitation of information, energy efficiency, and innovative user-oriented services.

Innovating Innovation – New frontiers for enterprise innovation

Innovation is one of the most important strategic driver to exit the crisis and boost the economy and, more generally, the growth of the country (even if it declined in the size of capital). The conference ‘Innovating Innovation’ aims to create a space for discussion and exchange on emerging solutions, the enablers, but also the main issues related to enterprise innovation. In a highly competitive globalized world it is necessary to rethink globally the methods, tools and strategies necessary to promote, facilitate, support and manage innovation in its various forms (product, process, technology, organization, etc.), paying particular attention to SMEs who, lacking the necessary critical mass, ask for the building of collaborative networks innovation oriented. http://bivee.eu/innovating-innovation-new-frontiers-for-enterprise-innovation/ ROMA, CNR, 20-21 october 2014 Gianmarco Veruggio - gianmarco.veruggio@ieiit.cnr.it

Resource allocation for green communications in relay-assisted wireless networks - Alessio Zappone (Technische Universitat Dresden).

A research topic which is gaining momentum in the last few years is that of energy efficiency. Unlike traditional resource allocation policies, the goal of an energy-efficient resource allocation policy is to strike the optimal compromise between reliably transmitting at high data rates and saving as much energy as possible. This trade-off is mathematically modeled as the maximzation of fractional performance functions which are measured in bit/Joule, thus representing the number of bits that can be reliably transmitted per Joule of energy consumed. The focus of the talk will be on wireless networks, where saving energy is even more important because it allows to extend the lifetime of battery-powered nodes. In particular, relay-assisted wireless networks will be considered, devising both distributed and centralized energy-efficient resource allocation algorithms. Generalized Thru-Reflected-Line calibration technique for the measurement of multimodal waveguide components - Prof. Antonio Morini

Abstract: The problem of performing measurements on waveguides when more than one mode is propagating dates back to the waveguide invention. Nonetheless, to date Vector Network Analyzers (VNA) just allow the measurement of monomodal waveguide devices, lacking of a calibration procedure allowing to recover the complete Generalized Scattering Matrix (GSM). Actually, there are many practical situations where dealing with multimode propagation is of paramount importance. A relevant case is the one of the low-pass filter, where often the stop-band includes a frequency range where more than one mode is propagating. Examples of measurement of multimodal devices, including low-pass filters and antennas, will be presented and discussed.

Vehicular networks are large-scale communication systems that exploit wireless technologies to interconnect moving cars. Vehicular networks are envisioned to provide drivers with real-time information on potential dangers, on road traffic conditions, and on travel times, thus improving road safety and traffic efficiency. Direct vehicle-to-vehicle communication is also foreseen to enable non-safety applications, such as pervasive urban sensing and fast data dissemination throughout metropolitan regions. [...]

Seminar Announcement: "Structured adaptive control - or how to solve LMIs with Simulink" - Dimitri Peaucelle (October 18)

Passivity-based adaptive control is a direct adaptive control strategy in which the control gains evolve accordingly to a differential equation involving the measured outputs of the plant. For LTI plants the adaptive law can be proved to stabilize globally the system if there exists a passifying static output feedback, which in turn happens to be an LMI feasibility problem. Relationship between general LMI feasibility problems and stability of some closed-loop with an adaptive law is discussed. It is proved that all LMI problems have a passivity-based adaptive control counterpart provided that some structure constraint is required asymptotically on the adaptive gains. The study allows to conclude that LMIs can be solved by simulating some non-linear dynamical system. Some preliminary experiments of this method are done using Simulink.

Seminar Announcement: Band Engineering of Complex Asymmetric Multiple Quantum Wells for Optically Pumped Semiconductor Disk Lasers - dr. Ivan Safonov, IEIIT Research Fellow

Asymmetric multiple quantum well active regions for optically-pumped semiconductor disk lasers (OPSDLs) are designed employing wave function engineering within GaAs/AlGaAs material system, which provide simultaneously good electronic confinement, large gain and effective carrier transport. Experimental investigation has shown that such an approach gives record values of the conversion efficiency among OPSDLs and provides high values of the output power.

Seminar Announcement - Robust Semidefinite Programming Problems with General Nonlinear Parameter Dependence: Application of the DC-Representations (February, 3, 2011)

Thursday, February, 3rd 2011, 14:00 Sala Riunioni CNR-IEIIT

Yasuaki Oishi (Nanzan University, Seto, Japan)

Abstract: In this talk, two conservative approaches are proposed to a semidefinite programming problem nonlinearly dependent on uncertain parameters. These approaches are applicable to general nonlinear parameter dependence not necessarily polynomial or rational. They are based on a mild assumption that the parameter dependence is expressed as the difference of two convex functions. The first approach uses constant bounds on the parameter dependence. Computation and optimization of the bounds are considered. The second approach uses parameter-dependent bounds.
This approach has a possibility to give a less conservative result than the first one. Optimization of the bounds is considered with respect to some measure of conservatism and its computational advantage is discussed. Numerical examples are presented for illustration of the approaches.
